Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. It is as simple as that. Do you have a good opinion about who you are, what you do,  do you value what you do etc. A healthy self-esteem is a realistic and appreciative opinion about your self.  Self-esteem is an important aspect of our emotional well being.

Today many people suffer from low self-esteem which is the cause of many problems. Low self-esteem can lead being afraid of failure, anxiety, bad decision making, and troublesome relationships. In this post we talk about Tips To Improve Self Esteem.

Experts have said that when your inner voice is more positive and encouraging then you will have high self-esteem, but if your inner voice is critical and judgemental then you are bound to have low self-esteem.

Tips To Improve Self Esteem

There are many ways to develop good self-esteem. You can consciously develop good habits which will improve your self-esteem.

Let us look at some tips for improving self-esteem.

1.Listen to your inner encouraging voice and stop the inner critic.

Your inner voice helps in building or lowering your self-esteem.  It all starts with a bad thought. Do not encourage bad and low self-esteem thoughts like your are not capable of doing anything, you are worse than your brother or sister etc.  Consciously stop these negative or critical thoughts. Encourage positive thoughts.

Some experts even suggest that you can audibly say “STOP” or just say no. This will help in denying the negative thoughts and will help you to refocus on other positive thoughts. In long run, it will help you in ignoring critical and judgemental views of both inside your heart and from people around you.

2.Take time to appreciate yourself.

This is something that most of us have forgotten in the busy schedules of our life. It is very simple and takes very little time. All you need is to ask top 5 things you appreciate about yourself. You can think about it or write it in your personal diary. It could be simple things like taking care about an elderly lonely family member or neighbor, being courteous and respectful especially to people who are poor, encouraging some friend who is discouraged, trying a new dish which came out very well, diligently going out for your morning walks. Think about all these things and motivate yourself. These short appreciative thoughts about yourself will help in motivating you and building up your self-esteem.

3.Set a target goal to improve your self-esteem.

One of the important ways of building your self-esteem is to set a goal of turning your negative and critical voice into a positive encouraging voice. Try to be more positive and affirmative towards yourself and others. Take conscious steps to appreciate yourself which in turn will help boost your self-confidence. The moment you find yourself getting critical then consciously remind yourself that these are just thoughts and not facts.

4.Get into the habit of writing a positive journal every day.

This positive journal or diary should list your positive attributes. Write down your accomplishments, compliments that others have given you, some motivating and inspiring quotes. This will help you to move away from negativity and focus on all the positive aspects.

Often take time to read what you have written. This positive journal should only consist of positive experiences, compliments and inspiring quotes.  Reading these things will boost your self-esteem and self-confidence.

5. Forgive yourself often for being imperfect.

Do not try to be perfect. There is no such thing as complete perfection. We are all human and we make mistakes. Learn to accept yourself and improve the areas that you make mistakes.  Handle your failures and mistakes appropriately.

You can still have high self-esteem as you work in your improvement areas. For e.g  Many mothers feel that they are not good moms when they lose temper with their child. You can work on controlling your emotions and apologize to your child and make them understand the reason for your shouting.

Remember when you look for perfection, it can dissuade you from taking certain action because you are afraid of not living up to some standard. This will lower your self-esteem.

6.Spend more time with positive people.

Try to be surrounded by positive people in your family or friends. When you are surrounded by positive people who are calm, encouraging, supportive it helps in uplifting your self-esteem.  Negative, rude and unkind people erode your self.

Read good positive books, blogs, websites, podcast etc. In my case, daily reading bible verse helps me to focus on God’s unconditional love.  God is love and he does not change. He loves me when I am good and when I am bad in the same way. This is very refreshing and encouraging.

7.Eat a healthy diet and Exercise regularly.

Eating a good diet and exercising regularly helps in keeping your mind and body alert and healthy. Include fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, legumes etc in your diet. Avoid sugary, oily and fatty foods. Processed foods should be avoided.

8. Spend time in prayer.

It is important to spend time alone in prayer. God is a source of all good things. In my case meditating on bible verses and spending time in praise and worship helps me to get refreshed and rejuvenated. It reiterates gods unconditional love on his children and helps in boosting your self-esteem.

9. Spend time in taking care of yourself.

Personal appearance and good communication skills also help in boosting your self-confidence. Try and wear appropriate clothing which will boost your self-confidence.  You can try something new like a new haircut or dressing style which will suit you. This will help in enhancing your self-confidence.

Good communication skills are important and they help in building your self-confidence and self-esteem.

These are some of the important tips which can help you in building your self-esteem. You can take the necessary steps to improve your self-esteem.
