8 Effective Time Management Tips for College Students Dsouza Pricilla

When you get older, the most important commodity that you learn to value is time. And the moment you get to college, you’re going to need to learn how to make the most out of every minute. Some might find it as a big challenge, but with having the right systems in place, you’ll be able to survive college without going crazy. Here are 8 tips on how your can manage your time effectively during your college days.

Take Note of the Essentials

Your presence in class is not just for the sake of attendance. You are there to learn and to listen to the lecture. Otherwise, the time you spend in class is just time wasted. So whenever your professor is giving lectures, make sure that you write down everything that you think is essential. This will in turn make it easier for you to study for your exams and know what and where to look into when working on your assignments or projects.

Set Goals and Accomplish Them

It helps to know what things you have waiting for you. Do you have a lot of plans and need them done by the weekend? Then set that as your goal: to get your tasks done by the weekend. But it’s not just about setting a goal. It’s also about the delivery. How do you plan to accomplish your goal? What do you need to do now to start achieving that goal? By figuring out what your goal is, it helps you identify the steps you will need to take to accomplish your goal.

Take One Step at a Time

With so many things to do as a college student, you will need to learn how to strategize. What do you need to get done now? What do you need to complete by tomorrow? What other things can you hold off in the meantime? You might want to create a list of your to do things, starting from the most urgent down to the least. Divide your tasks into 3: Today, Tomorrow, Next Day/s. This list can then help remind you about what you must work on today up to the following days of your week.

Create A To-Do List

Have a lot of things that you need to do? Then you have to make sure that you remember doing them all. A checklist is a very useful tool to anyone who has a lot of things that they need to get done. You can keep a notebook to use exclusively for your to-do list or you can either make use of your phone. There is a wide variety of checklist apps available online, wherein in just a few clicks you’ll be able to setup a to-do list for everything. From the subjects that you need to do advanced studies on, to the number of things that you need to buy when you hit the grocery. This way, you don’t have to wrack your head on the last minute trying to remember what else you need to get done.

Create a Routine

Establishing a routine is one of the best things that you can do to help you manage your time. The way you prepare for classes every morning, even with the steps you follow before going to bed, it helps set your mind as to what to expect as your next step. Once you get used to doing your routine, you tend to do things faster. Thus, a routine can help you spend less amount of time for your usual stuff.

Get Enough Sleep

A lot of college students nowadays tend to become sleep deprived, trying to balance their social life and education, along with some part time work for some. But for an adult body to properly function, it needs to charge up, and that’s why you need to sleep. As a college student, you need to get at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep. Yes, you need to have time with friends, studies, family, and work, but you need your health more. Sleep deprivation can affects how your brain and body functions, so if you want to function efficiently mentally and physically, you’ll need to get the right amount of sleep. You have to remember that the most essential tools you have to earn that much-coveted degree are your mind and body. So take care of them.

Practice Flexibility

Not everything will work out according to plan. That is why it is essential that you have a Plan B ready. Can’t finish a project today because you need to buy more materials? Then you might want to reschedule your grocery shopping today, instead of tomorrow, and hit two birds with one stone: get more project materials and stock up on some groceries. Being flexible is an essential skill if you want to avoid wasting precious time.

Say No to Cramming

Do you do things  always at the last minute? You might wanna change that up and start completing your tasks ahead of time. Accomplishing tasks at the last minute tends to be more stressful. Some might find it helpful to do things last minute as they tend to think better and faster under pressure, but it is not healthy. It is a stressful habit that you will need to break. Start the practice of planning your tasks and stop procrastinating. Once you have the chance, get on with whatever you need to do.

Clearly, managing your time will need a lot of discipline. But if you are really set on the idea of making the most of your college life, and with constant practice, you’ll be able to nail time management down to the T in no time at all.
