How to overcome loneliness Dsouza Pricilla

Today, with the use of technology, we find ourselves overloaded with family and friends. With social media at its best, we can connect with friends and family across the world. But the real question is – How do so many people still feel lonely and depressed? Loneliness is a strong emotional feeling, which needs to be taken care of. Many times people are surrounded by friends and family and yet they feel lonely and depressed. In this post, we show you How to overcome loneliness.

In this fast pacing world, everyone feels lonely at one point or the other. When people are stressed, they get a feeling of abandonment, distress and loneliness. This feeling needs to be dealt with before it can aggravate and lead to depression and other diseases.

How to overcome loneliness

1. Understand that loneliness is an emotional feeling and not a real fact.

Most of the time loneliness is experienced as a result of being alone, isolated or even after the loss of a dear one. It is during these times that you need to remind yourself of positive thoughts and words of encouragement. During these moments of loneliness, surround yourself with inspirational and motivational books and blogs.

2. Surround yourself with positive and encouraging people.

When you are lonely and feeling depressed, make a choice to think positively and surround yourself with positive people. People who are warm, kind and positive can make an impact on your life. Try to get yourself busy doing things that you like such as going out for a walk, enjoying nature, reading an inspirational book, cooking your favourite dish etc. This will help you move away from the negativity.

3. Get more connected with God and increase your faith.

Faith in God is the most important thingsthat can get you out of depression and loneliness. In my case, whenever I am faced with challenging moments or difficult situations or moments of loneliness, reading Bible verses on love and encouragement motivates me. It helps me understand the unconditional love of God for me that will help me tide over any situation in life.

Whenever you spend time in prayer and have a personal relationship with God, you will find peace and joy. Prayer groups also support and encourage you to stay strong in faith, which in turn helps in removing the negativity.

4. Try and get your focus on others rather than yourself.

Loneliness aggravates when we start focusing on our needs and our feelings. The moment we choose to look away from ourselves, we start to look at the positive side of life.

There is a true story which has inspired a lot of people. There was a lonely woman in the neighbourhood who used to go to a psychiatrist for counselling sessions, as she was lonely and depressed. One day the psychiatrist asked her what she was good at and she replied that she cooked and baked very well. He then suggested to her that once a week she should bake some cookies and take it to the orphanage in the neighbourhood.

Though initially, she was reluctant to do so, she decided to give it a try. In the very first week that she took the cookies to the Orphanage, she was so happy and encouraged to see the orphans relish the cookies that she decided to take them cookies twice a week, and then it became thrice a week and so on. Now she became one happy lady as she was busy buying the ingredients for the cookies and making them for the children. She no longer needed to visit the psychiatrist as she was not depressed or lonely anymore. She had found a new family.

5. Be kind to others and also be grateful for the things you have.

Kindness is a virtue that helps you experience joy and happiness. Whenever you are generous or kind to people around you, you immediately experience a sense of joy and satisfaction. This is due to the fact that your inner being i.e. your soul is connected to its creator i.e. to the Almighty God and so when you do good according to the will of God, you will experience peace and joy which surpasses all understanding.

Grateful people will never suffer from loneliness as they will always be grateful for the things around them. Life is not easy for them, but they take time to be grateful for every small blessing. Practicing kindness and gratefulness will help you overcome depression and loneliness.

6. Try and socialise with friends and family.

Due to social media, people have forgotten to call, talk or spend time with each other. They feel that if they can wish people on facebook, whatsup or twitter, then there is no need to call them up.

If you are lonely, take out time to call people on their birthdays or anniversaries. Try and get together on family occasions to meet and catch up.  You can also meet people during your regular walks, gym exercise sessions or even take a friend out for a coffee. Try and find other people who are lonely, so that you’ll can do things together.

7. Start a new hobby or get back to the things that you loved in the past.

One of the best ways to overcome loneliness is to do things that you loved doing in the past or try and take up something new. Many times we do not pursue our hobbies due to the lack of time. This is the time you should do what you love doing, e.g. taking up painting, cooking, baking, stitching, dancing, singing etc.

These are some of the things that you can do to overcome loneliness. Loneliness and depression are connected to each other. It is good to have a positive outlook inorder to overcome the loneliness in your life.
